Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
