The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
