One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
